Outfits Galore! (The Last 3 Days)

I have been a bad blogger this week. I just haven't found the time to blog but I'm trying to make up for it now!

I was very fortunate to be able to attend Barbara Bush's Celebration of Reading event this past Thursday.  Many members of the Bush family attended and George W. Bush read excerpts from his book, "Decision Points."  I enjoyed all of the authors there that evening and especially look forward to reading "Picking Cotton," by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino and Ronald Cotton.  Water for Elephants author Sara Gruen was also supposed to be there, but she fell ill.

For this event, I wore my new lace dress from White House Black Market that I got on sale at the outlet for under $40.

Friday night, my H and I went to the Ke$ha concert @ Verizon. It made me feel old. There were all these teens there with their parents and all of the girls had colorful eye makeup on, bright clothes, lace tights and glitter there everywhere---on clothes, faces, bodies, hair. I guess I missed the memo.

I opted for comfy clothes because I literally woke up from a nap, threw them on and went to the concert. I was up at 3am Friday morning WATCHING THE ROYAL WEDDING, so you can imagine I was exhausted. I can't even blog about that right now because I am still stunned by the whole thing and need time to gather my thoughts. SO amazing.

Finally, today's outfit also included the same top as above (I had only worn it for just over an hour at the concert). I had my hair colored and cut today, but these photos were taken prior to that.  Then, I had lunch at Gigi's Asian Bistro with Candice and did a little shopping (more to come on that). Tonight my H and are going out for dinner for a friend's birthday. Yum!

Spring Flowers

Lori is back again with two more Couture projects, as promised. The first Lori describes as, "a very simple layout documenting my tulip love in the spring time and how I love to bring them in the house this time of year for a little SPRING inside!"

How did she do it? She "used samples from the paper collection to piece together to form a quilt together.... Love all of the colours in this line... so pretty and soft and perfect for spring layouts."

"I made my flower by accordion folding my paper and then layering it on top of a die cut accent and then adding some of the pretty embellishments from the Couture Sundries."

The second project for today, from Lori, are these pretty altered flowers. She says, I "made this flower bouquet from an altered kit I had from years ago. Just coverd some chipboard flowers with scraps of paper and then used all of the pretty buttons and brads as the centers. A very simple project but so much fun to make! I used my paper crimper to crimp my scraps and used them to fill the bucket."

"It is a perfect gift for mothers day as an extra splash of colour and the perfect type of flowers to give - the ones that won't die!!"

Thanks for the reminder, Lori! Mother's Day is a week from tomorrow. Is anyone making a gift this year? What is it? We'd love to hear your ideas!

Catherine was played by Camilla Luddington and William by Nico Evers-Swindell.TV programmes were also shown in the UK prior to the wedding which provided deeper insights into the couple's relationship and backgrounds, including When William Met Kate and Channel 4's Meet the Middletons.

20 Years

This beautiful layout is the first of three Couture projects Lori created for you this month. We love all the tumble dye misting and painting techniques she used on this layout.

Lori says "This layout is featuring 2 quick photo's that were snapped of my DH and I on our family vacation in Florida last summer - just a month before our 20th anniversary... so I used them to document our anniversary together."

"I love the look of mist and paint on all of my layouts and I love that this paper had it already done for me!! I played a lot with the purple dye that was provided to me and used it on the canvas heart (with acrylic paint) and on my tags and journalling strips."

"I also experimented with the mist and sprayed the SEI acrylic letters... spread it around with my fingers and then let them dry overnight and it became a marble effect on the letters.. LOVE how cool they turned out!!"

It's Not Easy Being A Girl

They say the truth hurts, but I'm here to tell you that beauty hurts more.

Not natural beauty, of course--but the kind of beauty that we ladies pay good money for and for which we subject our bodies to various torturous devices and garments.  Here's my list of things that women use that are seriously painful, but we do them anyway... all in an effort to look pretty.  Feel free to add any that I may have missed in the Comment section!

High Heels

I've written before about high heels that have ruined my night, and I stand by my theory that high heels were created by a misogynistic sadist whose quest to torture women just happened to produce something that also makes our legs and asses look fantastic.

"Comfortable high heels" is a total oxymoron, yet when special occasions arise we wedge our poor hooves into unnatural positions, crunch our toes into narrow leather restraints, and put undue pressure on our lower backs... all because.... well, why do we do it?  Because it's expected of us, sure.  Because legs look stumpy when you're wearing flats, definitely.  Some women want to look taller, but as a 5'7" "giant" that was never the case for me.

The older I get, the less inclined I am to suffer for fashion.  When I shoe shop I become a bit of an old lady, uttering previously-unheard of  phrases like, "That heel is too skinny for me," and "Does this come in Wide?"  I'm seriously one step away from throwing in the towel and getting a pair of these beauties:

False Eyelashes

Long, lush lashes are something that we all strive to achieve.  There's a multi-million dollar industry built on the fact that women will smear everything from beeswax to bat crap on their eyelashes in order to make them darker and longer.  On special occasions I've been known to rock some false eyelashes, and while I love how they look, I do NOT love the process of applying them.  You have to put glue on them, you see, and then get them in just the right place on your eyelid, which isn't easy.  Then you have to hold them there until they dry, and you can almost guarantee that they will start to come off at some point... which is a weird look.

But you cannot deny that for certain occasions, nothing but long black eyelashes will do:

Spanx

It's a well-documented fact that I own several pairs of Spanx (and other corset-y, suck-you-in undergarments), but the truth of the matter is that Spanx suck!  They don't make you look thinner, they just smooth out your lumps and fat rolls and relocate them to other, weirder places. Sure, they can make your lumpy cottage cheese ass look less lumpy and cottage cheesy, but they will not eliminate the junk in your trunk.  Only diet and exercise will do that... and we all know how I feel about those. 

Hair Extensions

Since I'm not a Hollywood celebrity I have very limited experience with hair extensions, however recently Mala tried hers on me and I have to tell you... they may look amazing, but they hurt like a mofo!  The clip-on kind (like Mala has) are little comb/clip things that fasten onto your hair at the roots, and when all is said and done you're left with a very heavy head of hair that once belonged to a cash-strapped Indian woman and is now clipped painfully to your scalp.  Every movement of your head reminds you that they are there; and they're not just heavy... they hurt.

The permanent extensions are even more expensive and even more painful, from what I've heard, so every time you see an actress go from short to long seemingly overnight, know that they're lugging around a few pounds of paid-for locks that are probably hurting their skulls with every nod and shake of their heads.  Jennifer Aniston, who is known for her gorgeous head of hair, admits to being "addicted" to hair extensions and to losing a lot of her real mane as a result of using the extensions so much.



Clearly, I'll put up with a lot in order to look as fabulous as I can on special occasions. Between the above examples of vanity and the fact that girls are well known to be terrible bitches throughout adolescence, I can say without hyperbole that it's not easy being a girl!
